OVERVIEW & FUNCTIONING

Pune city has been ruled by the Rashtrakuta, Satavahana and Yadava rulers. Young Shivaji, with his mother RajmataJijabai, laid the foundation of Pune during their stay here.The Moghuls followed thereafter.The growth of Pune happened during the Peshwa reign. The British took over Pune and its surrounds post the decline of the Peshwas in 1818. Establishment of the Municipal Council in the year 1858 saw setting up of civic infrastructure in the city.

This historical and cultural city saw the MunicipalCorporation being set up in 1950. Pune experienced a rapid growth, particularly post the Panshet floods of 1961. Pune MunicipalCorporation (PMC) - besides providing basic civic services like water, roads, street lights, primary health and education has also taken efforts to conserve and preserve city's rich historical legacy. PMC's Heritage cell is an important step and considering the importance of preserving heritage and tourism potential of the city, the civic body has undertaken several important projects. PMC has established a heritage committee to enlist heritage properties in the city and to prepare guidelines for the same.
